What is Synvisc Classic made from?
Synvisc Classic is an elastoviscous fluid with a high molecular weight that contains hylan A and hylan B polymers derived from chicken combs. Hylans are hyaluronan-derived compounds (sodium hyaluronate). Synvisc Classic’s hyaluronan is chemically crosslinked, making it a one-of-a-kind product. This long-chain polymer is made up of repeating Na-glucuronate-N-acetylglucosamine disaccharide units. Once injected, hyaluronan begins to lubricate and cushion the knee joint, effectively eliminating pain.
What can Synvisc Classic be used for?
Synvisc Classic is used to treat pain caused by knee osteoarthritis in patients who have not responded appropriately to non-pharmacological therapy and other pain relievers such as acetaminophen.
Osteoarthritis develops when synovial fluid, which lubricates the joints, including the ones in the knees, wears out prematurely and loses its shock-absorbing properties. This degenerative process results in decreased mobility, stiffness, discomfort, and pain. Who should not use Synvisc Classic?
- Patients with known hypersensitivity or allergies to hyaluronan preparations should not use Synvisc Classic. No less importantly, patients with allergies to products derived from birds, such as feathers, eggs, or poultry, should avoid using Synvisc Classic.
- Synvisc Classic should not be used in patients who have a knee infection, skin diseases, or an infection near the injection site.
- Synvisc Classic has not been tested in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Patients under the age of 21 are also not advised to use the product.
